Beer Quarry Caves
Beer Quarry Caves are part of the England;s only Natural World Heritage Site.
You can go on guided tours with experienced tour guides who provide an hour-long tour of the complex and vast network of man-made underground caverns. The underground caves were created by centuries of quarrying the famous Beer Stone.
The Romans were the first to work the quarry and supplied the stone for over 24 cathedrals which include Exeter and St. Paul's Cathedral, part of the tower of London, Hampton Courts, Windsor Castle and Westminster Abbey.
The stone was quarried by hand, and the stone was carted by horse-drawn wagons and barges from Beer beach to it's destination which sometimes several hundreds of miles away.
